The changes in higher education that are currently taking place under the Law on Higher Education and Science (also called “Constitution for Science”) introduce doctoral schools that will replace the “old” doctoral studies. Doctoral Schools will start their activities from the academic year 2019/2020 (the first year to be recruited on new terms). The main information for candidates is as follows:

  • The same rules of recruitment apply for Polish candidates and for international candidates in accordance with the Recruitment Act (at the University of Warsaw interviews with candidates applying to doctoral schools will be held in English language for those who don’t speak Polish fluently)
  • Doctoral schools are free of charge for all participants
  • Every doctoral student that doesn’t possess a degree of doctor receives a doctoral scholarship for the period of maximum 4 years
  • Education in doctoral schools takes 4 years with a possibility of extension by not more than 2 years
  • Curriculums of doctoral schools will be announced in the second half of May 2019.

In order to apply to a doctoral school a candidate has to register in the Internet Registration for Candidates System (IRK) under the following address: IRK

A candidate has to fill out information about him/herself, choose a proper doctoral school and register. There will be 4 doctoral schools:

  • Doctoral School in Exact and Natural Sciences
IRK registration available from 23 May 2019 till 21 June 2019
  • Doctoral School in Humanities
    IRK registration available from 1 June 2019 r. till 5 July 2019
  • Doctoral School in Social Studies
    IRK registration available from 1 June 2019 r. till 5 July 2019
  • Interdisciplinary Doctoral School
IRK registration available from 23 May 2019 till 14 July 2019

After registering in the IRK system, the candidate has to submit all the required documents within dates specified by a doctoral school. The list of the documents and the mentioned dates are available in the IRK system – in a proper doctoral school. Main documents include: an application form to a doctoral school, a master degree diploma, a general prospectus of a planned doctoral thesis, an opinion of the potential thesis supervisor and other documents that are specified by a doctoral school.Recruitment for Doctoral Schools
